Spring 2002
-
The
Findorff construction crew is recycling 77%
of the construction wastestream that would have gone into
the Dane County Landfill since the beginning of phase 2
in July 2004. To achieve these outstanding results WasteCap
Wisconsin hired Madison Environmental Group to work with
J.H. Findorff & Son and manage the construction waste
recycling for Madison’s new Overture
Center for the Arts. As of August 2005, during phase
2 Findorff recycled more than 4.95 tons of cardboard, 54.71
tons of wood, and 4165 tons of concrete.
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources funded part of
this construction recycling pilot project. Click
here to read the grant report which outlines the methods
we developed and the results, including dollars and resources
saved. Please note that the numbers in the report only reflect
totals from the grant period, not the whole project which
we continue to manage.

¼ inch concrete screening and used in basements
and driveways.
-
Overture designs were produced on high-grade white paper,
which was recycled back into paper at Wisconsin paper
mills.
-
Cardboard
was reprocessed into new cardboard.

Polyurethane
foam was collected and reprocessed into new foam sheets.

Drywall was collected at Overture and processed in a
demonstration project to produce agricultural fertilizer.
Financial
Savings from Recycling in Phase 1
Estimated disposal quantities and costs
without recycling
April
2002 – August 2004
Total
tons of waste (excluding fill):
3,175
Total
volume of waste (cubic yards): 13,768
Total disposal costs if NO Recycling (hauling + tipping):
$129,416
Actual
disposal costs with recycling: $ 97,601
Savings:
$ 31,815
This
represents a 25% savings in disposal costs
over a 29-month period.
Construction Waste Reuse
Packaging
materials can sometimes be reused from construction sites.
We were able to identify reuse markets for shredded paper
and styrofoam packaging when this material was available
from the Overture construction site. The pipe organ for
the Overture Center was shipped from Germany in wooden crates.
These wooden crates were taken apart and reused as ceiling
panels in a cabin in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
