EnAct (Winter
2003 - )
The City of Madison, Dane County,
Madison Gas and Electric, and various partners hired
Madison Environmental Group to develop and manage
EnAct. EnAct creates Environmental Action Teams in
neighborhoods and community groups to promote sustainable
living and strengthen communities. Team participants
take actions to reduce waste, conserve energy and
water, protect water quality, and reduce automobile
use. On average, participating households save 174
pounds of garbage, 556 kWh of electricity, 23 therms
of natural gas, 13,541 gallons of water, 1,050 vehicle
miles, 1,907 pounds of CO2, and $295 per year. Visit
www.enactwi.org
for more information, including an online version
of the EnAct Participant guide. learn

Community
Car (Summer 2003 - )
We
read a book that changed our lives in Fall 2000 called
The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices:
Practical Advice from the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Michael Brower and Warren Leon suggest that reducing
car use is the single most effective choice an individual
can make to lessen their impact on the environment.
With this new information, and the stunning fact that
for every mile you drive you emit 1 pound of CO2 into
the atmosphere, we decided that Madison Environmental
Group should get into the transportation business.
